It was a beautiful sunny day on Saturday, February 16th for the 3rd Annual Chile Pepper Eating Contest held at Marty’s Chili Nights in Indian Lake. 10 contestants registered to eat as many jalapeno peppers as they could in one minute. The official master of ceremonies, Jodie Harr, started the festivities by having all the contestants draw numbers to decide their turn, with the returning champion, Art Sabourin electing to go last.
This year the Jalapeno peppers were huge and scared some of the contestants. Each person started out with a bowl of 10, but no one was able to get past that first bowl. The restaurant was full of spectators, cheering on their favorite contestant.
Four participants from the 2007 contest returned to compete again this year; Art Sabourin, the reigning champion; Jamie Mitchell, 2nd place winner; Ron Comstock and Richelle Greenhalgh.

The defending champion, Arthur Sabourin of Indian Lake had to beat Jamie’s count to retain his title. As the last 10 seconds were counting down, Art swallowed number 11 and was chewing on number 12 when the timer went off amidst a very loud crowd who drowned out the bell and flashing cameras! Later his wife said Art was wearing his OLD lucky shirt, the same one he wore last year!
